MIXING & MASTERING

Musical mixing with practical production support — built for real releases.
What this service is
I work primarily as a mixing engineer, helping artists and producers turn finished recordings into cohesive, professional records that translate across systems — without losing the character of the original performance.
While the core of this work is mixing, the process often includes careful corrective and creative interventions — tuning, timing refinement, and additional production where requested — when those elements meaningfully improve the final result.
This isn’t about fixing everything.
It’s about addressing the things that most often hold good songs back from sounding finished.
“Matt enhanced our recordings with creative ideas while staying responsive throughout the mixing process — always open to trying different sounds and directions.”
— Hedgeriders
How I approach mixing
My approach sits between the technical and the musical.
I’m listening for:
-
performance and emotional intent
-
balance, depth, and movement
-
vocal clarity and placement
-
how the record behaves in real-world listening environments
I don’t mix to presets or templates. Each project is approached on its own terms, with decisions guided by musical judgement rather than trends or loudness targets.
Working across styles
Mixing work often spans very different musical contexts, each with its own priorities and technical challenges.
Recent projects have included:
-
80s-influenced pop and new-wave material, where groove, synth balance, and vocal presence need to sit together without crowding
-
Neo-soul, R&B, and pop records, where dynamics, feel, and low-end control are central
-
Rock and live-band recordings built from full multitrack sessions, often requiring detailed drum timing correction and enhancement
-
Hip hop projects, where translation, vocal focus, and low-frequency management are critical
-
House and tech-house releases prepared for commercial distribution, where clarity and consistency across systems matter as much as punch
The genre may change, but the focus remains the same: clarity, cohesion, and musical intent.
Listening examples
(Before / After – selected)
These short examples demonstrate the kind of decisions I make — not a one-size-fits-all process.
Example 01 — Vocal clarity, balance and time correction
Rough Mix
Final Mix
Acoustic folk-pop mix where subtle timing, tuning, and tonal shaping helped the performance sit confidently without losing its natural feel.
Example 02 — Low end focus and vocal processing
Rough Mix
Final Mix
A multitrack pop/soul recording where low-end control improved impact, while vocal tuning, tonal shaping and spatial detail brought the record into focus.
“Great communication, a collaborative approach, and mixes that really elevate the track to a professional level.”
— Manni Gill (DJ G-Money)

WHAT'S INCLUDED
Mixing
My approach sits between the technical and the musical.
I’m listening for:

performance and emotional intent

vocal clarity and placement
-

Tuning & timing (when appropriate)
Transparent vocal tuning and timing refinement are available as part of the mixing process where needed.
This is handled with restraint — preserving natural feel while addressing issues that distract from an otherwise strong performance.
The aim is confidence and clarity, not artificial perfection.
Additional production support
Some projects benefit from light production work alongside mixing.
This may include:
-
refining arrangement elements
-
sound replacement or enhancement where recordings fall short
-
subtle additional layers to support the song
Any production work is discussed and agreed upfront, and applied only where it genuinely serves the track.
Mastering (included, with flexibility)
Mastering is included where appropriate to provide a release-ready stereo master.
However, mixes can always be delivered without a dedicated mastering chain if you plan to work with a specialist mastering house. Mixes are prepared with sufficient headroom and clarity to support external mastering cleanly.
The goal is flexibility — not forcing a single path.
Delivery & process
-
Reference mixes shared via private streaming links
-
Clear revision limits agreed in advance
-
Final masters and deliverables released once payment is complete
A clear process keeps the focus on the music.
SCOPE & INVESTMENT
Each mix project is scoped individually depending on stem count, arrangement complexity, and workflow requirements.
After an initial conversation I’ll outline the best approach, timeline, and cost so everything is clear before we begin.
EP or album projects can also be discussed as a package where appropriate.
WORKING TOGETHER
When this approach works best
This service tends to work well if:
-
you care about how your music translates outside your own setup
-
you want musical judgement, not automated processing
-
you're working toward a finished release
If you're looking for instant turnaround or purely loudness-driven processing, I may not be the right fit.
Mixing is ultimately about trust — trusting someone to make decisions that serve the song rather than impose a sound.
If you're considering working together on a mix, feel free to get in touch and tell me a little about the project and where you are in the process.
You’re also welcome to send an mp3 of your rough mix to: studio@matcatmusic.com
